Are netbooks really THAT slow?

I have a Toshiba m750 tablet. It weighs 2kg, I wouldn’t call it heavy, but its definitely not light.
So now I’m searching for a net-book tablet to have something that is really portable. There are 2 that I’ve targeted: The Asus T91MT and Lenovo S10-3t.
I’m leaning heavily towards the Asus but it has an atom Z520 (1.33Ghz) processor which has been called very slow. But then again it has a SDD drive, which i’m sure is faster than a normal HDD
The Lenovo on the other hand has an atom N450 (1.6Ghz) processor, but a 5400 RPM HDD…
Many reviews and people I’ve talked to say net-books are slow. Thing is, I always set my m750 to run no more than 33% of the full processor speed, meaning it sits at 0.8Ghz max. I don’t think my computer is slow by any means, besides slow copy and paste for large files.
So would the T91MT be REALLY slow? Likewise with the S10-3t?
I’m only going to use it to take notes (one note), web browsing (some light flash gaming included), word processing and PDF reading. Will these tasks be fine? I probably won’t be running more than 2 or 3 of these tasks together.

I think the "slowness" people experience arises from running two or more resource-hungry applications simultaneously which these Atom processors aren’t designed to do - the scenario you describe above doesn’t strike me as particularly resource heavy anyway and I think either netbook should cope. Btw, have you considered the Toshiba NB300/305 which has excellent battery life? If you expect your netbook to get a few knocks and bruises, I’d go for the SSD drive. Just remember that there are different types of SSD and the cheaper ones tend to be a little less responsive, especially when you are writing data to them. I know that the SSD that came with the Acer Aspire netbook was particularly bad whereas the Asus EEE PC was much quicker.

People love to say things that are very fast are slow today because they were able to have a single thought while waiting. The fact is, any netbook you buy is gonna be faster than the average computer from, say 2000. The bottom line is this: if you play music, leave one of those flash games running in the background, write your notes in word, and use AIM all at the same time you’re going to see some hiccups, but the machine will work fine.
As for your assumption of slower processor with SSD (solid state disk drive for those that don’t know) rather than faster processor with 5400rpm HDD, you’re spot on. I would definitely opt for the Asus.
If you want to squeeze a bit more speed out of it, you could downgrade from Windows 7 to Windows XP (which would require you purchase a copy of XP, 7 will be gratis with the machine) for a performance boost, but XP is going to be obsolete before long. It is, however, what I would do.

The Z520 has a PassMark CPU rating of 251. The N540 has a PassMark CPU rating of 328.
For comparison, a typical $600 laptop might have a Core 2 Duo T6600 CPU which has a PassMark rating of 1,577. A cheap $450 laptop might have a Pentium dual-core T4400, with a PassMark rating of 1,466.
It will work for taking notes, web browsing, word processing, and PDF reading. But heavier flash games (like Cafe World, Farmville, and the like) will probably be unplayable.
I have a desktop with an Intel Pentium D dual-core 960 CPU, with a PassMark rating of 1,029. Farmville is playable, but Cafe World is just barely playable. Email, word processing, browsing the web, reading PDFs are all just fine on it.

my mom has an acer aspire one running XP.it has something like a 1.6 g processor, 1 gb ram and a 160gb hard drive.the asus should be able to perform the computing tasks you describe.JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON’T GET A NETBOOK WITH WINDOWS VISTA, it will be as slow as hell, but i did take a netbook running windows 7 at costco for a spin, and it was very fast.
